        ARTIST BIO

Wang Xiaoli was born in Jiaozuo, Henan, and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Macau. She employs oil painting to explore the relationship between the self and the external world, developing a distinctive visual language. As an "observer of daily life," she draws inspiration from urban lightscapes, fleeting expressions, and seasonal changes, channeling emotional nuances into her work through color, brushwork, and composition. She regards each piece as a "visual diary," seeking to establish a wordless yet appealing dialogue with viewers. Technically, she expands upon traditional oil painting by incorporating mixed media such as texture paste, sand, and fabric, which enhances the tactile richness and emotional depth of her works. She embraces improvisation, allowing spontaneous brushstrokes and intuitive color combinations to express genuine emotion and imbue her art with a unique vitality.

        ARTIST STATEMENT

Wang Xiaoli’s artistic practice centers on oil painting, through which she investigates the spontaneity and evolutionary character of the creative process. She draws inspiration from the uncertainty embedded in every brushstroke—the constant need to revise, rework, and sometimes conceal. Her work communicates the notion that compelling art is rarely born of a single attempt; instead, it emerges through accumulated layers of revision and transformation. Those partially obscured strokes, lines reworked out of hesitation, or textures preserved by chance become the most dynamic elements within the painting, serving as visible traces of both artistic decision-making and the passage of time.By deliberately retaining these “imperfections” and layered histories, she builds depth through the accumulation of color, brushwork, and texture—evoking a tangible sense of duration and process. Wang hopes that viewers will not only feel the visual intensity of her work but also perceive within it the courage to embrace uncertainty, to deconstruct and rebuild. Like art—and life itself—her paintings embody a journey enriched by repetition, change, and persistence.
